Menyanthes trifoliata latin

It is known in English by the common names bog-bean and buckbean.

Buckbean, Marsh Trefoil, Menyanthes, Menyanthes trifoliata, Trèfle d'Eau, Water Shamrock.

The flora of the area includes many post-glacial cold-climate plants native to bog and fen habitat, including Labrador tea, cotton grass, pitcher plants, showy lady's slippers, larches, and buckbean.

Herbs: Rare northern herbs also populate the area: oak fern, pod grass, Canada mayflower, mountain bindweed, marsh marigold, goldthread, swamp saxifrage, white wood sorrel, northern white violet, Jacob's ladder and buckbean.

Menyanthes trifoliata has a horizontal rhizome with alternate, trifoliate leaves.

Menyanthes trifoliata occurs in fens and bogs in Asia, Europe, and North America.

Menyanthes is a monotypic genus of flowering plant in the family Menyanthaceae containing the single species Menyanthes trifoliata.

Bog bean,Menyanthes trifoliata and the bog arum,Calla palustris are increased by chopping their scrambling stems into sections, each with a dormant bud.

The constant species are Carex rostrata, Potentilla palustris, Galium palustre, and Menyanthes trifoliata.

The second contains wetland plants including Acorus calamus, Marsilea strigosa, Menyanthes trifoliata, Osmunda regalis,etc.

The constant species are Eriophorum angustifolium, Menyanthes trifoliata, Sphagnum auriculatum and S. cuspidatum, while S. recurvum is rare.

Recent research in use of constructed wetlands for subarctic regions has shown that buckbeans (Menyanthes trifoliata) and pendant grass (Arctophila fulva) are also useful for metals uptake.

The larvae feed on various plants, including Cicuta virosa, Menyanthes trifoliata, Solanum dulcamara, Convolvulus, Lactuca (including Lactuca sativa) and Arctium species.

Recorded foodplants include Myrica, Calluna, Vaccinium, Salix, Betula, Ranunculus aconitifolius, Comarum palustre, Lysimachia nummularia and Menyanthes trifoliata.

This fen is also one of the few Canadian locations for the Bogbean Buckmoth a species of silk moth that feeds on another typical fen plant, Bogbean (Menyanthes trifoliata)(see photo at lower right).

Particularly noteworthy at Pike Whin Bog are greater spearwort, Ranunculus lingua, slender tufted sedge, Carex acuta, marsh stitchwort, Stellaria palustris, and bog bean, Menyanthes trifoliata.

It now contains over 700 plant species from the Massif Cansiglio-Cavallo including Gentiana symphyandra, Geranium argenteum, Menyanthes trifoliata, Potamogeton natans, Rudbeckia laciniata, and rare and medicinal alpine plants.
