Astrictive - suction forces applied to the objects surface (whether by vacuum, magneto- or electroadhesion).

Applications include the retention of paper on plotter surfaces, astrictive robotic prehension (electrostatic grippers) etc.

Vacuum grippers are very simple astrictive devices, but can hold very large loads provided the prehension surface is smooth enough to ensure suction.
