In the summer the bay is a breeding and moulting area for the Lesser White-fronted Goose.

Lesser White-fronted Goose is considered an endangered species, but there are programmes to reintroduce animals into the wild to strengthen the population.

The Lesser White-fronted Goose winters further south in Europe and is a very rare winter visitor to Great Britain.

The area is an important stopower site for migrating Common Cranes, Dotterels, and Lesser White-fronted Geese.

The park has a national responsibility for rearing and reintroduction of the white-backed woodpecker, peregrine falcon, green toad, lesser white-fronted goose, and several species of beetle.

The Greater White-fronted Goose is more closely related to the smaller Lesser White-fronted Goose (A. erythropus).

Adult Lesser White-fronted Geese, as well as being smaller than White-fronted Geese, have an obvious yellow eye-ring, and the white facial blaze goes up to the crown.

The number of ducks, geese and swans is greatest in winter, with large flocks of White-fronted Geese, sometimes with a rare Lesser White-fronted Goose amongst them.

Waterfowl breeds in or passing through Kaziranga includes several rare species of geese (Lesser White-fronted Goose), and ducks (Ferruginous Pochard, Baer's Pochard).

Other rare species are present too, such as the Lesser White-fronted Goose, the Great Snipe, the Red-throated Pipit, the Long-tailed Duck and the Bar-tailed Godwit.

LESSER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE Anser erythropus.

Whimbrel, long-tailed jaeger, eagle and rough-legged buzzard can also be seen and with a bit of luck the unusual species lesser white-fronted goose, gyrfalcon and great grey owl can be observed.

This include Lesser White-fronted Goose, Gyrfalcon, Golden Eagle, White-tailed Eagle, Great Snipe, Rough-legged Buzzard and Long-tailed Jaeger.

The upper wing-coverts are dark brown, as in the White-fronted Goose (Anser albifrons) and the Lesser White-fronted Goose (A. erythropus), but differing from these in having narrow white fringes to the feathers.

As well as being larger than the Lesser White-fronted Goose, the Greater White-fronted Goose lacks the yellow eye-ring of that species, and the white facial blaze does not extend upwards so far as in Lesser.

Shoyna lies immediately south of the 167 square kilometer Shoyninsky State Nature Reserve, established in 1997 to protect the spring and autumn staging area for the Lesser White-fronted Goose (Anser erythropus), an Arctic species threatened with extinction.

Birds such as the Lesser White-fronted Goose, Ferruginous Duck, Baer's Pochard duck and Lesser Adjutant, Greater Adjutant, Black-necked Stork, and Asian Openbill stork migrate from Central Asia to the park during winter.

The presence of a very occasional lesser white-fronted goose from Scandinavia on the reclaimed land of the Severn is well-known to have been a crucial factor in Sir Peter Scott's choice of site for the new wildfowl refuge and research station he had dreamed of creating during the War.

Most notably, the Lesser White-fronted Goose is listed by IUCN Red List as Vulnerable throughout its range, and due to overhunting and rampant habitat destruction, the population of the Swan Goose is on the verge of collapsing, leading to a listing as Endangered.
