Each ward, or aldermanry, has its own Alderman, who is the most senior official or representative in the ward.

The Ward and Aldermanry were effectively abolished in 1978, by merging it with the Ward of Bridge (Within).

Martin was briefly imprisoned for debt, which led to his removal from his Aldermanry on 31 August 1602 on account of his "unfitting demeanour and carriage".

Southwark was also simultaneously referred to as the Ward of Bridge Without when administered by the City (from 1550 to 1900) and as an Aldermanry until 1978.

In 1588 Skinner was Sheriff, conjointly with John Catcher, and succeeded Catcher in the Aldermanry of Cripplegate when Catcher was discharged due to financial difficulties.
