The Australian Shelduck's primary habitat is lakes in fairly open country.

The Australian Shelduck breeds in southern Australia and Tasmania.

Subsequently it became a popular site for waterfowl hunting, especially of Chestnut Teal and Australian Shelduck.

It is important as a moulting site for Australian Shelduck, and as a drought refuge for large numbers of ducks and shorebirds.

The Australian Shelduck, Tadorna tadornoides, is a shelduck, a group of large goose-like birds which are part of the bird family Anatidae.

The lake is recognised as a DIWA wetland as it is a drought refuge for waterbirds and a moulting area for the Australian Shelduck.

Other waterbirds known to breed at the lake include the Black Swan, Australian Shelduck, Pink-eared Duck, White-headed Stilt and Red-capped Plover.

Some of the species found in the area include Black-winged stilt, Banded Stilt, Australasian Shoveler, Australian Shelduck and the Red-necked Avocet.

It has supported over 1% of the world populations of Chestnut Teal, Australian Shelduck, Sharp-tailed Sandpiper, Red-necked Stint, Banded Stilt, Red-necked Avocet, Pied Oystercatcher and Red-capped Plover.

Numerically significant species include the Australian Shelduck, Black Swan, Chestnut Teal, Grey Teal, Freckled Duck, Musk Duck, Pink-eared Duck, Hardhead, Banded Stilt, Hoary-headed Grebe, Australian Pelican and Yellow-billed Spoonbill.
