acrodermatitis chronica atrophicans

Acrodermatitis chronica atrophicans (ACA) is a chronic skin disorder observed primarily in Europe among the elderly.

Herxheimer is credited with providing an early description of acrodermatitis chronica atrophicans (diffuse idiopathic cutaneous atrophy), which is a dermatological disorder associated the latter stages of Lyme disease.

Research in Europe had found that erythema migrans and acrodermatitis chronica atrophicans, another rash caused by tics in Europe, responded to penicillin, suggesting that the cause was bacterial, not viral.

The first study dates to 1883 in Breslau, Germany (now Wrocław, Poland ), where physician Alfred Buchwald described a man who had suffered for 16 years with a degenerative skin disorder now known as acrodermatitis chronica atrophicans.
