Trichuris

The genus Trichuris is particularly well known for being a common parasite of domestic animals and less usually humans.

To date, twenty-two Trichuris species have been described.

However, there have also been rare reported cases of transmission of trichuris trichiura by sexual contact.

At least 500 million carry Trichuris.

Infection of trichuris trichiura is most frequent in areas with tropical weather and poor sanitation practices.

As identification by microscopy is unreliable due to near identical sizes of different species of Trichuris spp.
