Spirochaeta is a genus of bacteria classified within the phylum Spirochaetes.

Spirochaeta americana is a relatively newly discovered single-celled extremophile.

Spirochaeta - thin spiral-shaped bacteria first described in 1835 Haeckel does not explicitly assign this genus to the Monera.

Spirochaeta also have unique flagella, sometimes called axial filaments, which run lengthwise between the cytoplasmic membrane and outer membrane.

Sometimes, tonsillitis is caused by an infection of spirochaeta and treponema, in this case called Vincent's angina or Plaut-Vincent angina.

S. americana reproduces via transverse binary fission, where the cytoplasm divides transversely between two sets of nuclei, forming two dissimilar individuals, as do other Spirochaeta.
