It is a close relative of the larger Sambar deer.

This maintains a sambar deer population of 70-100 individuals.

At present, the largest and the most commonly seen mammal is the Sambar Deer.

They do not occur at higher elevation forests where they are usually replaced by other species such as the Sambar deer.
