One of the most handsome firs, but hard to find even at specialist nurseries, is the European silver fir.

Dinaric calcareous block fir forest; European Silver Fir (Abies alba).

Made from the extremely hard wooden branch-bases of the European silver fir and noticeably incised at one end, they may have been used as a mounting for stone blades.

The second layer mostly extended on the northern and western slopes, between 1000m and 1750m, and is composed of norway spruce forests and, locally, european silver fir.

It also uses mixed broadleaf and conifer woodland, and stands of spruce, European silver fir, cedar and pines, often with undergrowth of juniper, ivy and wild rose.

The park contains beech, fir, pines, and oak species as well as species such as Purple Willow, Norway Maple, Silver birch, and European silver fir in the northern slopes of the Park area.

Abies alba, the silver fir or European silver fir, is a fir native to the mountains of Europe, from the Pyrenees north to Normandy, east to the Alps and the Carpathians, Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina and south to southern Italy and northern Serbia.
