The state insect is the European Mantis.

Originating in southern Europe, the European Mantis was introduced to North America in 1899 on a shipment of nursery plants.

Two species (the Chinese Mantis and the European Mantis) were deliberately introduced to serve as pest control for agriculture, and have spread widely in both countries.

The European mantis (Mantis religiosa) is the state insect of Connecticut, but the General Statutes of Connecticut do not list any special protected status, as it is a non-native species from Europe and Africa.

Animals are represented by, for example, the European mantis, Rosalia longicorn, Lucanus cervus, Mountain Apollo, Great crested newt, Black Stork, Saker Falcon, Eurasian Eagle-owl, Eurasian Lynx, and Wildcat.

Mantis religiosa, referred to as the European Mantis outside of Europe and known simply as the Praying Mantis in Europe and elsewhere, is one of the most well-known and widespread species of the order Mantodea.

The State Insect, the Praying Mantis, Mantis Religiosa, was adopted by Act of the Legislature, 1977.
