Coxiella burnetii

Coxiella burnetii, the bacteria that causes Q fever.

The cause was found to be Coxiella burnetii, with their findings published in 1948 in the American Journal of Public Health.

Outside the boundaries of the enteric lineage, only Coxiella burnetii, X. fastidiosa and two chlamydial species are thus far known to possess trpR .

During the time he worked on Q fever with Australian scientist E.H. Derrick, the causative organism of which was named Coxiella burnetii in Burnet's honour, he became the first person to acquire the disease in the laboratory.

This is considered adequate for destroying almost all yeasts, molds, and common spoilage bacteria and also to ensure adequate destruction of common pathogenic, heat-resistant organisms (including Mycobacterium tuberculosis, which causes tuberculosis, but not Coxiella burnetii, which causes Q fever).

The exact history, functions and current status of this facility are still unclear, but bio-agents tested there included Bacillus anthracis, Coxiella burnetii, Francisella tularensis, Brucella suis, Rickettsia prowazekii, Variola major (smallpox), Yersinia pestis, botulinum toxin, and Venezuelan equine encephalitis virus.
