Here's our friend Mister Coal Tit back again.

A number of Coal Tit subspecies are distinguished.

The Coal Tit is 10-11.5 cm in length, and has a distinctive large white nape spot on its black head.

While searching for food, Coal Tit flocks keep contact with incessant short dee or see-see calls.

It is closely related and similar to the Coal Tit, and is sometimes considered to be conspecific.

Birds include coal tits, nuthatch and green and great spotted woodpeckers, while tawny owls and kestrels have bred on the site.

Being common and widespread, the Coal Tit is not considered a threatened species by the IUCN.

Coal tits are among the birds which will feed from these, but they do cache seeds, and so be prepared for sunflowers germinating all over your garden and beyond.

The Coal Tit, also in this genus, is a much more widespread species, ranging from the British Isles and North Africa to Japan.

The coal tits seemed most interested in the feeder with sunflower hearts, perhaps because these seeds are the easiest to peck out and carry away to store for future use.

Recorded for the reserve are Whitethroat, Nightingale, Turtle Dove, Coal Tit, Goldcrest and Song Thrush.

These lively songbirds are mainly solitary but will move around actively in small, loose flocks of their own species as well as with Coal Tits and Eurasian Nuthatches.
