The Ara Project aims to start a Great Green Macaw reintroduction program in 2011.

The Military Macaw appears superficially similar to, and may easily be confused with the somewhat larger Great Green Macaw.

Endangered species in the area include the Great Green Macaw, Turkey's Tail, Ocelots and the West Indian Manatee.

The reserve protects the largest remnant of moist forest on the right bank of the San Juan River, which is home to the endangered Great Green Macaw.
