Fruit bodies grow together in small groups on the ground in association with Bishop Pine (Pinus muricata).

There are a number of other collections, for instance a small collection of conifers, with nice specimen of Keteleeria davidiana and Bishop Pine Pinus muricata.

First collected in 2002 on Santa Cruz Island off the coast of California, in association with Bishop Pine (Pinus muricata), the species was scientifically described and named in 2010.

In Mendocino County the occurrence is in a discontinuous coastal terrace strip, primarily as a pygmy forest associated with Bishop Pine (Pinus muricata) and Mendocino Shore Pine (P. contorta var.

The bishop pines of the Phillip Burton Wilderness are considered an "intermediate" between the northern variety (Pinus muricata v. borealis) and the southern (Pinus muricata v. muricata).

The most widespread naturally of the closed-cone pines is Bishop Pine (Pinus muricata), which can be found along the coast from Humboldt County, California in the north to the northwestern corner of Baja California in the south.
