Using Rosa foetida in 1887, he and his father began developing yellow rose cultivars through a cross between a red hybrid perpetual and 'Persian Yellow'.

They mostly have Pernetiana blood - Pernet was the first to breed into hybrid tea roses the intense yellow colour and strong smell of Rosa foetida - and are not frost hardy.
