Ashmore and Cartier Islands

It does not include the uninhabited Ashmore and Cartier Islands.

Politically it is part of Ashmore and Cartier Islands, an external territory of Australia.

It was leased to Customs, primarily to patrol the Ashmore and Cartier Islands for up to 330 days per year.

East Island (Ashmore and Cartier Islands)

Further to the northeast are Ashmore and Cartier Islands, and to the southwest are the Rowley Shoals.

Two of the islands are Melville Island, part of the Tiwi Islands, off Australia and the Australian-governed Ashmore and Cartier Islands.

Lesser territories that are under the administration of the federal government, such as the Jervis Bay Territory, the Ashmore and Cartier Islands, and the Coral Sea Islands, are not listed.

The Territory of Ashmore and Cartier Islands is two groups of small low-lying uninhabited tropical islands in the Indian Ocean north-west of Australia and south of the Indonesian island of Roti.

It is part of Lesser Sunda Islands and is located west of the island of Rote Island, 500 km from the coast Australia and 170 km from the Ashmore and Cartier Islands.

Defence of Ashmore and Cartier Islands is the responsibility of Australia, with periodic visits by the Royal Australian Navy, Royal Australian Air Force and Australian Customs and Border Protection Service.

Under the definitions in ISO 3166-1, the Ashmore and Cartier Islands and the Coral Sea Islands are covered by Australia, and the Australian Antarctic Territory is covered by Antarctica, with alpha-2 code .

The agency is also responsible for combating illegal fishing in Australia's Exclusive Economic Zone including the waters between Australia and Indonesia and in the Southern Ocean and the Australian territories of Ashmore and Cartier Islands and Heard Island and McDonald Islands.
